Situation: Approximately 1,100,000 Americans will have a new or recurrent coronary attack every year. 450,000 of these are recurrent events, and within one year of an attack, 25% of men and 38% of women will die. The American Heart Association has practice guidelines that will save lives. These are evidence based and proven valid. Yet the reality is that over half of U.S. heart patients are not managed to AHA guidelines. Because of this, the American Heart Association developed their Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) program. If implemented nationwide, the coronary artery disease module, GWTG-CAD, could save up to 80,000 lives each year. To facilitate this, awareness and implementation of GWTG-CAD needs to be instituted in every hospital possible. |
